Tips for Catheter Insertion
When you see urine, advance catheter 1 to 2 inches.
Hang foley bag below the level fo the catheter.
Do not place foley bag on the side rails. Attach to bed frame.
Provide pericare with soap and water.
Keep closed system
Clients, unless contraindicated, should be encouraged to drink fluids.
Suprapubic Catheters
Lower risk of infection
Catheter Care
Keep Foley bag below the bladder at all times. Backing up of urine can cause infection.
Increase fluid intake.
Monitor for sediment and mechanical obstruction can block urine drainage.
Secure catheter tubing to upper thigh.
Notify Physician if client develops fever and chills.
