Side effects of lithium

For Manic Phase of Bipolar Disorder

Lithium is indicated in the treatment of manic episodes of Bipolar Disorder.

Ataxia

Poor muscle control that causes clumsy movements

Neuro/ Eye symptoms

Tremors, confusion, seizures, delirium, blurred vision, and nystagmus (rapid movements of the eyes).

GI symptoms

Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Cardiovascular symptoms

Arrhythmias and prolonged QT interval

Nursing Interventions

Lithium Toxicity

Lithium serum levels normally range from approximately 0.6 to 1.2 mEq/L.  Above 1.5 mEq/L = Toxicity.  Treatment: discontinue medication and start hemodialysis.

Treatment is hemodialysis

Monitor

Dehydration, hyponatremia, and kidney disease can lead to lithium toxicity. HYPONATREMIA bad.

Having toxicity symptoms?

Get lithium level!

Diet

Eat foods with salt such as bacon, ham, and V 8 juice.

Take with food

Preferably, take lithium with food to prevent upset stomach.
