Parathyroid Gland Disorders

  • Embedded in the thryroid gland.
  • Main function is to balance calcium balance
  • Promotes resorption of calcium from bone to maintain normal serum calcium levels.
  • Promotes absorption of calcium in the GI tract
  • Calcium important for clotting, bone health, and muscle and nerve responses.
  • Starting with the parathyroid gland below the blood vessel
  • Parathyroid gland senses calcium levels drop and starts to work to increase calcium but increasing GI absorption and calcium bone release into the blood.
  • When thyroid senses that calcium blood level too high, it releases calcitonin to lower calcium.
