Preoperative Care

Let's start with informed consent

  • Informed consent is the responsibility of the surgeon.  Surgeon must explain risks and benefits of the the surgery he or she is performing before patient signs informed consent
  • No sedation should be given to client prior to signing consent
  • Older clients or clients who have dementia or are confused may need legal guardian to sign
  • Minors must have parents signed unless emancipated minors
  • The nurse may be a witness after she or he makes sure that client understands procedure.

Let's see what we missed...

  • Informed consent
  • H&P and other consults in chart
  • Labs, Xrays, EKGs, Type and Screen
