Aplastic Anemia

Aplastic Anemia

  • ⇓ Red blood cells due to bone marrow suppression.
  • Can occur alone or with leukopenia (⇓ WBcs) or thrombocytopenia (⇓ Platelets).
  • Occurs in oncology and it is diagnosed by bone marrow aspiration and biopsy.

Cells Affected in Aplastic Anemia

Aplastic anemia is a rare and potentially life-threatening condition that affects the bone marrow’s ability to produce enough new blood cells.

Low Red Blood Cells

Anemia

Low White Blood Cells

Infections

Low Platelets

Bleeding

Causes

  • Cytotoxic drugs
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals
  • Radiation
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Viral infections

Symptoms

  • Bone marrow suppression causes ⇓ RBCs, ⇓ WBCs, & ⇓ platelets.
  • Macrocytic anemia⇒ red blood cells are large.
  • Anemia symptoms: weakness, fatigue, pallor, shortness of breath, & dizziness
  • ⇓ WBCs = risk for infection
  • Low platelets⇒ easy bleeding: petechiae (small  pots on the skin, mouth and lips).
  • Ecchymosis =  bruising

Treatment & Precautions

  • Blood transfusions
  • Immunosuppressive therapy
  • Bone marrow transplant
  • Bleeding precautions
  • Neutropenic Precautions (infection)

Bleeding Precautions

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and be gentle with your gums.
  • Avoid flossing
  • Use electric Shaver
  • Avoid using aspirin or blood-thinners
  • Apply gentle pressure to any cuts or wounds x 10 minutes and elevate the affected area above the heart.

  • Wear protective gear if you must engage in potentially hazardous activities.
  • Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and other substances that can increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Use caution when handling sharp objects or tools.
  • Watch for signs of bleeding, including bruising, bleeding gums, or nosebleeds

Neutropenic Precautions

  • Good hygiene
  • No sick visitors
  • No raw or undercooked foods, especially meats, seafood, and eggs.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects frequently, including phones, computers, and doorknobs
