Conjunctivitis

What is it?

Conjunctivitis, also known as “pink eye,” is an inflammation of the clear lining on the surface of the eye and inside of the eyelids. It can be caused by bacterial or viral infections, allergies, or irritants such as smoke or pollution.

Symptoms

  • Redness in the whites of the eyes, itching, tearing, discharge and swelling of the eyelids.
  • Conjunctivitis can be highly contagious

Interventions

  • Administer prescription eye drops or ointments
  • Warm compresses can help alleviate symptoms.
  • Good hygiene practices: hand washing to prevent spread of the infection.
  • Avoid touching or rubbing eyes
  • Stay home from work or school until the infection has cleared up.
