Epistaxis (Nosebleeds)

Dry mucous membranes can cause nosebleeds

What is it?

Epistaxis is nosebleed, which occurs when blood leaks from the tissue lining the inside of the nose. This can be caused by dryness of the nasal passages, injury, environmental irritants, high altitude, medication, and underlying medical conditions such as hypertension and blood clotting disorders.

Interventions

  • Pinching the nose, applying direct pressure, using a cold compress, and leaning forward to prevent blood from flowing down the throat.
  • Keep the child calm and quiet.
  • Medical attention may be necessary, which could include cauterization (a procedure to stop the bleeding),  & packing the nose with gauze.
Pinch nose x 10 minutes and lean forward
