Hiatal Hernia

Esophageal or diaphragmatic hernia where stomach herniates through the diaphragm and to the thorax. Weakening of the diaphragm due to pregnancy, ascites, obesity, tumors or heavy lifting

Diagnosis

Barium swallow with flouroscopy

Symptoms

Heartburn, regurgitation, vomiting, dysphagia, chest pain, & feeling of fullness.

Treatment

 Medical and surgical management similar to GERD. Small frequent meals with little fluid, & do not recline after meals

Complications

Hemorrhage, ulceration, strangulation and incarceration of the stomach.

NCLEX Alert: Teach client to drink plenty of fluids  and eat fiber to expel barium after the procedure.
