Wilms' Tumor
Wilms' tumor, also called a nephroblastoma, is a type of childhood cancer that typically affects one or both kidneys. Requires partial or total nephrectomy.
The signs and symptoms of Wilms’ tumor include abdominal swelling, usually on only one side, pain or tenderness in the abdomen, blood in the urine, fever, hypertension, weight loss, poor appetite, and nausea or vomiting. Children may also appear tired or irritable, have a loss of appetite or experience growth delays.
Preoperative
Bedside sign: Do not Palpate Abdomen. Measure abdominal girth daily. Monitor vital signs, especially blood pressure (tumor may cause renin to be released)
Postoperative
Monitor for hemorrhage, infection, abdominal distension, bowel obstruction, kidney function (I & O) and Vital signs.
