Weight gain due to fluid retention/edema

What is it?

Nephrotic syndrome is a kidney disorder characterized by increased protein excretion in the urine, low serum albumin/protein levels, high levels of lipids in the blood, and edema or swelling

Symptoms

  • Swelling, especially around the eyes, feet, and ankles
  • Ascites
  • Low urine output; frothy urine
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • High levels of protein in urine (Proteinuria)
  • Low levels of albumin in the blood
  • Hyperlipidema

Symptoms

  • Monitor vital signs and fluid status
  • Daily weight
  • Evaluate laboratory values: serum albumin, creatinine, BUN, electrolytes, and urine protein
  • Monitor for fluid overload and electrolyte imbalances
  • Administer diuretics & corticosteroids
  • Ensure adequate protein and calorie intake
  • Limit sodium intake to prevent edema
  • Plama expanders such as salt-poor albumin for severe edema
