  • H. Pylori (A bacteria)
  • Alcohol/Caffeine
  • NSAIDs/Steroids
  • Smoking
  • Stress

Pain NOT relieved by food. Pain occurs 30 minutes after eating.  Food causes nausea and vomitng.  This is a malnourished client.

Duodenal Ulcers

Food relieves pain.  Pain occurs 2-4 hours after meals or at bedtime

Treatment

  • Proton pump inhibitors (Pantoprazole)
  • H2 blockers (famotidine/Ranitidine)
  • Bismuth (Pepto-bismol) & Antacids
  • Carafate (Sucralfate)=creates barrier for ulcer to heal
  • Diet: Avoid spicy, acidic, & fried foods
  • No alcohol, no caffeine
  • 3 Drug Treatment of Peptic ulcer H. Pylori= Omeprazole (prilosec), Amoxicillin, and clarithromycin (biaxin)
