Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Do not prone babies

What is it?

The sudden and unexplained death of an otherwise healthy infant, typically under the age of one year, but most commonly in infants ages 1 to 3 months. The exact cause of SIDS is unknown, but several risk factors have been identified, including placing the baby on their stomach to sleep, exposure to secondhand smoke, overheating, and soft bedding materials.  Best room temperature is 68 to 72 ° F.

Prevention

It is recommended that infants are always placed on their backs to sleep, on a firm and flat surface with no soft objects or loose bedding in the sleep area. Keep room at a comfortable temperature and avoid exposing them to smoke. Breastfeeding, using a pacifier, and regular prenatal care can also help reduce the risk of SIDS.
