Hodgkin's Lymphoma

  • Mostly in teens, young adults and 50-60 year olds. Young and old

  • Prognosis depends on stage of disease

  • Causes: Viral infections (HIV, Epstein-Barr Virus)

  • Hallmark sign: Reed-Sternberg Cells in lymph nodes
  • n
  • Metastasis occurs from one lymph node to adjacent lymph node in orderly fashion

  • Also in tonsils, spleen and bone marrow
  • n
  • Symptoms: Enlarged painless lymph nodes (> 1cm); night sweats, fever, weight loss, malaise, fatigue.

  • Lymph node pain induced with alcohol.

  • Cervical nodes most often affected. Again is here where the Hodgkin’s Lymphoma begins.

Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma

  • 50-60 years old and risk increases with age. Mostly in men. Only old
  • Lymphoid tissues is infiltrated and spreads unpredictably. Local disease is rare as compared to Hodgkin’s disease.
  • All lymphoid cancers that do not have Reed-Sternberg cells
  • Causes: viral, pesticides, insecticides
  • Symptoms: painless lymph nodes that spread to GI trat, skin, bone marrow, sinuses, thyroid, CNS. EXTRANODAL
  • Yes, more aggressive
  • Tx: chemo, radiation, bone marrow transplant
