Hypoparathyroidism

  • Decreased in PTH level leading to hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia
  • Accidental removal of parathyroid gland during thyroidectomy or neck surgery.
  • Muscle weakness/spasms
  • Dry skin
  • Bronchospasms and laryngospasms
  • Seizures
  • Cardiac Dysrhythmias
  • Circumoral paresthesia
  • abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.
  • Positive Chvostek and Trousseau sign.

Phosphorus

  • Treatment: Vitamin D to enhance calcium absorption
  • Increased calcium in diet.
  • Calcium supplements
  • give calcium gluconate/calcium chloride for acute hypocalcemia with symptoms.
  • Monitor for Cardiac Dysrhythmias
  • Sedatives and anticonvulsants
  • Seizures precautions
  • Quiet environment
  • Assess for bronchospasms
  • Administer bronchodilators
  • Tracheotomy at the bedside
  • Calcium potentiates digoxin. Monitor for digoxin toxicity.
