The NCLEX sometimes asks about staples!

Let's learn to remove them

  1. Usually removed 7 to 14 days after surgery.
  2. Explain procedure to the client.
  3. Tell the client it is not painful. The client will feel a pinching sensation.
  4. Wear non-sterile gloves
  5. Remove every other staple first to assess tension on the wound.
  6. Place staple extractor beneath the staple. Do not pull up as you close the handle of the staple extractor.  Gently move the staple from side to side.  The two ends of the staple should bend outward and out of the skin.
  7. When both ends are visible. You are done! Remove the staple.
  8. There should be no wiggling of the staple.
  9. Apply steri-strips to the wound.
  10. Of course, wash your hands before and use no- touch technique. Do the usually infection control standards.
  11. Most important, remember that you do not pull the staple until both ends are visible and you first remove every other staple.
