Multiple Myeloma

  • A malignant proliferation of plasma cells in the bone. Malignant plasma cells produce Bence Jones protein found in the blood and urine.

Nursing interventions

  • Chemo/radiation/steroids and everything that comes with it.
  • Prevent bone fractures. Administer bisphosphonate medications such as pamidroate disodium and z oledronic acid to slow bone damage and u21d3 fractures
  • Encourage > 2L fluid daily to prevent risks of renal problems due to hypercalcemia (u21d1 Ca+), hyperuricemia, and proteinuria.
  • Monitor for s/s of renal failure
  • Safe environment/mobility to prevent fractures
  • IV fluids/ diuretics to promote excretion of calcium
  • Infection prevention measures.
