Paracentesis

Indications

A needle is used to remove ascites fluid from the peritoneum that accumulates due to liver cirrhosis.

Procedure

  • Most paracentesis performed in radiology department.
  • NPO after midnight
  • Take weight before and after fluid removal
  • Measure abdominal girth
  • Must empty bladder prior to paracentesis to prevent bladder puncture.
  • Supine position and slightly rotated toward the side of the procedure.
  • Post-procedure assess for s/s of hypovolemia such as hypotension, tachycardia, pallor, and dizziness.
  • Label fluid and send to the lab asap.
  • Post procedure monitor for: fever, bleeding from puncture site, changes in bowel sounds, hematuria, and severe abdominal pain.
