Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia

VAP

  1. Leading cause of death in intubated clients
  2. May be due to aspiration or bacteria from the oral cavity or sinuses.

Nursing Priorities

  1. Handwashing
  2. Elevate HOB 30 to 45 degrees
  3. Good oral care
  4. Early extubation
  5. Closed ventilator circuit
  6. Peptic Ulcer Disease prophylaxis to prevent aspiration
